The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB Bring Learning Science to Life.

At The Southport School, exceptional teaching is strengthened by exceptional access to research through The Southport CoLAB.

For more than 40 years, The Southport School has translated the science of learning into teaching for students with learning differences, ADHD, and executive function challenges. By working closely with students who benefit from explicit instruction, the School has developed deep, classroom-tested expertise in supporting complex learning profiles.

Founded in 2018 and embedded within The Southport School, The Southport CoLAB extends this work beyond campus. Approaches developed in real classrooms for complex learners lead to clearer, stronger instruction for all learners.

Grounded in neuroscience and cognitive science, our work is informed, tested, and refined in classrooms at The Southport School, where teaching and learning happen every day. Research shapes practice, classroom experience drives discovery, and emerging practices are strengthened through continuous use. This ensures educators gain strategies that are both evidence-based and classroom-ready.

Ongoing collaboration among leading researchers and scholars in neuroscience, cognitive science, and education, as well as with the School’s classroom teachers, keeps our work research-aligned, classroom-tested, and responsive to the realities of teaching across diverse educational settings.

The relationship between The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB is expressed best through their shared values:

  • Cerebrodiversity celebrates the many ways people think and learn, shaping a belief in the potential of every learner.
  • Collaboration drives the exchange of ideas among educators, researchers, and families.
  • Empowerment guides the work of equipping students, teachers, and families with tools that have a lasting impact.
  • Excellence is reflected in exceptional teaching, continuous professional learning, and research-based practice.
  • Innovation lives in the ongoing research, experimentation, and application of new approaches that benefit students first and help inform the field more broadly.
Together, The Southport School and The Southport CoLAB share a common purpose: To turn learning science into meaningful practice that strengthens teaching, expands opportunity, and helps every learner reach their potential.
