Expanding Access to Knowledge, Resources, and Support

The Southport CoLAB’s community programs and services make research-informed knowledge and practical resources more accessible to families, caregivers, educators, and community members. Designed to deepen understanding, build early awareness, and provide actionable guidance, these programs support those helping learners navigate school and life.
 
Through public programs, early literacy resources, and shared expertise, The Southport CoLAB helps communities better understand how students learn, how learning develops, and what supports can help children build self-advocacy, confidence, independence, and readiness for success in school and beyond academics.
 
Community Lecture Series
The Community Lecture Series reflects the shared outreach mission of The Southport CoLAB and The Southport School. These free events provide access to expert perspectives and practical resources related to learning, cognitive development, literacy, executive function, student well-being, and school success.
 
Hosted in person and virtually, the series features local and nationally recognized speakers who share current research, lived experience, practical strategies, and timely perspectives on learning science and education. Topics explore emerging issues, effective practices, and available resources that help families, educators, and community members better support learners across a wide range of strengths, needs, and settings.
 
Created to educate, inform, and empower, the Community Lecture Series expands access to meaningful ideas and actionable strategies that can strengthen how we understand and support all learners. All Community Lecture Series events are free and open to the public.

Free Reading Screening Program
Early literacy insight can help families better understand a child’s developing reading skills and take informed next steps. Offered through collaboration with The Southport CoLAB, The Southport School, and research partner EarlyBird Education, the Free Reading Program provides families with early reading information that may help identify areas where additional support could be beneficial.

By expanding access to early literacy screening, the program helps families better understand reading development, respond sooner to potential challenges, and connect children with support when it can be most impactful.

The screening is designed to provide helpful insight, not a diagnosis. Families receive information to support conversations with educators, pediatricians, specialists, or other providers and to guide next steps toward literacy support.
