Advancing Learning Science Through Research, Practice, and Community Outreach

In partnership with leading universities, researchers, and learning organizations, The Southport CoLAB provides evidence-based professional learning, instructional frameworks, and implementation support for educators, schools, and organizations seeking to improve outcomes for all learners.

Rooted in the daily work of The Southport School, The Southport CoLAB takes what works in real classrooms and helps schools and systems apply it in meaningful, sustainable ways. Embedded within the School’s daily teaching, our work evolves through lived practice and ongoing collaboration with leading scholars in neuroscience, cognitive science, executive function, and literacy.

Built in Real Classrooms
For more than four decades, The Southport School has refined teaching for students with complex learning profiles. Founded in 2018, The Southport CoLAB was created to extend that expertise beyond campus by bringing neuroscientists, cognitive scientists, and education scholars into ongoing collaboration with our classroom teachers.

Our work begins with research and is tested, refined, and strengthened through daily practice at The Southport School. Research shapes instruction, classroom experience informs discovery, and emerging practices improve through continuous use. This ensures educators receive strategies that are both evidence-based and classroom-ready.

Stronger Systems for All Learners
By working closely with students who benefit from explicit instruction, The Southport School has developed deep expertise in approaches that support complex learning needs. Practices designed to support students with language-based learning differences, ADHD, and executive function challenges also contribute to clearer, stronger instruction for every learner.

Building Lasting Change
Through the sharing of knowledge, training, and tools, The Southport CoLAB empowers educators, families, and communities, helping reduce inequities and expand access to transformative education. The result is more coherent, adaptive learning environments that better support all learners through stronger instruction, stronger educator capacity, and lasting change.
